Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone's found any apps for the Iphone that will turn it in to a wireless router so I can hook a laptop up to it? You can't teather the iPhone under wondows, at least the iPhone 4,... any help would be great!!!
Chris
Any ideas, anyone?:)
It wouldn't be an app it would be via Settings if it's possible. This is because you're asking the router to become a gateway / repeater. It's an OS level function. I don't have one so don't know if it's possible or not.
It is possible under AT&T's network, but they charge you like heck for it. For just 2 gb of data under AT&T's network, it's $25, but when you want to tether they charge another $20. But no, there are no apps for making your iPhone a wireless router. The only way is tethering.
Well, if the phone is jail broken, it can also be utilized as a wireless router.
But, I would loose voice over, if I jailbreak it...
Is that true or just a myth?
It's a big myth.
Assuming you're running 4.01 (Downgrade if your not or wait a couple of weeks), just visit http://www.jailbreakme.com from your device and let it do it's thing.
Once you've done that, get someone sighted to open cydia and add
http://cydia.hackulo.us
to the list of repositories. Then, download "AppSync" without the quotes which will let you install unsined ipa's (Applications which have been obtaind from slightly interesting places) onto your device using iTunes.
Once you've done that, I'll send you handylight which will let you tether.
If you can't find someone to help you with cydia, download cider2 for windows, add the source I mentioned above and download the AppSync deb along with it's dependencies.
Once you've done that, download something like iPhone folders which will let you brows the file system of your device when it's connected to your computer.
Navigate to /var/root/media/Cydia/AutoInstall (Take note of the capitals); if the Cydia and the AutoInstall folders don't exist, make them.
Now, drop the downloaded deb files into the AutoInstall folder, wait 30 seconds then reboot your device. AppSync won't install an icon, so the only way that you'll have of being able to tell if it's installed or not is to try and sync an unsined ipa to your device through iTunes.
If you use cider2 often, you'll notice that the AutoInstall feature of cydia is terribley unreliable. The solution is to install "OpenSsh" to your device. Then, you can copy all the debs over wirelessly using pscp or something like that, then use putty to ssh into your device where you would type
dpkg -i /path/*.deb
to install the packages, after which type
reboot
to reboot the device.
Obviously you'll have to use AutoInstall to install OpenSsh, but that'll be the last time that you'll ever have to use it.
Hope that was clear; it was very rushed incase you couldn't tell.
No point in jailbreaking the devices now, what's the freakin'g point?
Surely this topic ilistrates one of the reasons why jailbreaking is still worthwhile?
Hi,
Could you still use voice over if the phone is jailbroken?
ahh, sorry, didn't pay attention to the prevfious posters... Sorry,...
Jailbreak your phone and get PDANet.
